Windies lacked the wits to dominate crucial phases of play, meaning Bangladesh could find a way to 255/7- in the first innings of the second ODI in Dhaka. Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan – all playing their 100th ODI along with Mahmudullah – scored fifties but Oshane Thomas’s pace and ill-timed wickets towards the end offset Windies’s lack of imagination, ensuring that Bangladesh didn’t get too far ahead.

Thomas’s pace was too hot to handle. Imrul Kayes departed early, edging one behind to the keeper, and then Liton Das was forced to retire hurt after being hit on the back leg by a searing inswinger. The Bangladesh opener returned to resume his innings after x-ray scans ruled out a fracture.

It was a crucial 111-run stand between Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim that helped Bangladesh back on their feet after the early stutter. Both batsmen hit fluent fifties on a pitch that was far better than the two-paced track on offer in the first ODI. Tamim fell slog-sweeping Devendra Bishoo, who bowled all his overs by the 34th and registered figures of 1 for 27.

Rahim’s wicket followed soon after Tamim, meaning Bangladesh had to rebuild again. Mahmudullah and Shakib stayed together for 61 runs to make sure Bangladesh have the launching pad for the slog overs. Back to back wickets of Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar though offset Bangladesh’s plans. Shakib raced to 65 off 62 with some audacious hits but his wicket in the 47th over, bowled by Kemar Roach, meant Windies could sneak a few slow overs towards the end. Only 26 runs were scored for the loss of two wickets in the last five overs.

Brief Scores: Bangladesh 255/7 in 50 overs (Shakib Al Hasan 65, Mushfiqur Rahim 62, Tamim Iqbal 50; Oshane Thomas 3-54) vs Windies.
